Resistance Training MYTHS

People can Spot Reduce. :
  There is no such thing as spot reduction. Weight training and cardiovascular exercise improve muscle tone and aid in the loss of body fat, but specific exercises cannot reduce body fat in one specific area. If there is weight to lose, an exercise program combined with aerobic exercise will result in weight loss from all over the body. The main problem areas is women (hips and thighs) and men (love handles) are normally the last part of the body to significantly change. The main word to live by while exercising….PATIENCE!!!!
   
Consuming large amounts of protein or taking protein supplements will increase muscle size and strength. :
  Excess protein will not increase muscle growth, muscle mass, or muscle strength. Approximately 15-20 % of total calories should come from protein rich foods. High intensity workouts stimulate an increase in muscle mass. Energy needed to fuel the high intensity workout comes from carbohydrates. Thus, it is the combination of high intensity workouts and a proper eating plan that will lead to an in increase muscle mass and strength.
   
After I quit exercising, my muscle will return to fat. :
  This is impossible!! Each (muscle and fat) has a completely different chemical make-up. Therefore it is physiologically impossible. If a person stops being active, the muscle tissue that has been built up will decrease in size back to its pre-exercise form. Even if you have never exercised, your muscle will still shrink over time. This is normal with aging, but it is in our hands to decrease muscle wasting with age. When people stop exercising and start to gain weight, they blame their muscles turning to fat. The truth is that you will become fatter if you stop exercising because your muscles will shrink from disuse, and without activity to burn calories most people will notice their weight changing.
   
Resistance training will make a person muscle-bound or inflexible. :
  Muscle bound refers to a person who has a large amount of muscle mass. Inflexibility is used to describe a lack of normal range of motion. As long as a person participating in resistance training performs exercises through a full range of motion and participates in a flexibility program, he/she will not become inflexible.
   
Resistance training will cause a female to look like a man! :
  physiologically impossible for women to build their bodies the same as men. There is a difference in hormonal levels (testosterone) between males and females. Women produce a minimal amount of testosterone, which inhibits their ability to Look like a man! Those women body builders who look man-ly have probably taken a testosterone steroid supplement. Women can only get bigger by increasing their intensity during their workouts and maintaining a rigid diet for muscularity. (Genetics plays an important role as well.) It takes many years of hard work and discipline for females to achieve muscular development to a high degree
   
Resistance training will make a person slow. :
  False!! All it takes is to watch the Summer Olympics or any professional sport. Athletes work countless hours in their off seasons in the weight room to improve strength so their muscles will move faster, for a longer period of time, and with less likelihood of injury.
   
Resistance training is only for athletes. :
  When beginning a resistance-training program, athletes commonly strive for improved sports performance and injury prevention. While each person’s goal may be not be the same, both athletes and non-athletes may display specific physical improvements in such areas as muscular strength, muscular endurance, body weight maintenance, improved physical appearance, improved energy reserve and general improvement of health.
